| King of the Lombards, the son of Penmone, Duke of Friuli. He succeeded his brother Rachis as king in 749, and in 751 took the Exarchate and the Pentapolis from the Byzantines. When he threatened Rome, Pope Stephen II asked Pepin III, King of the Franks for help. Astolfo was twice (754, 756) defeated by Pepin, and was forced to surrender the territories which formed the core of the Papal States. |
