| Landscape painter, born in York, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. His family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, when he was three. In 1899 he returned to England and studied in the artists' colony at St Ives, Cornwall. He quickly established a reputation as a landscape artist, especially for his bridges of the Seine and other French and Mediterranean subjects, and was a leading opponent of modern trends in painting. |
