| Actress, born in London, UK. She first appeared on the stage with the Birmingham Repertory Company in 1926, and scored a great success in London in Jew Süss in 1929. She acted leading parts at the Old Vic in the season of 1932–3. Her famous roles included Juliet in Sir John Gielgud's production of Romeo and Juliet (1935). Her films include The Thirty-nine Steps (1935) and A Passage to India (1984), for which she won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. She was created a dame in 1956, and a new London theatre was named after her in 1962. |
