| Architects and decorators: Cosmas Damian Asam (1686–1739) and Egid Quirin Asam (1692–1750), born in Bavaria, SE Germany, sons of the fresco painter Hans Georg Asam (1649–1711). They worked together, the former as a fresco painter and the latter as a sculptor, combining architecture, sculpture, painting, and lighting effects in church interiors to produce highly emotional decoration and melodramatic high altars, such as that of the Abbey Church at Weltenburg. |
