| Biochemist, born in Helsinki, Finland. As professor of biochemistry at Helsinki (1939–48), he carried out research into the processes by which plants obtain nitrogen and complex organic substances from the soil. He showed that silage can be preserved by the application of dilute hydrochloric acid, and studied nutrition and the development of food resources, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1945. |
