| Critic and poet, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He studied at Chicago, Colorado, and Stanford universities, and in 1949 was appointed professor of English at Stanford. His Collected Poems were published in 1952. He is remembered primarily as an irascible critic, anti-Expressionist, and with a sharp eye for detail. Significant books are In Defence of Reason (1947) and The Function of Criticism (1957). |
