| Mechanical engineer, born in Camborne, Cornwall, SW England, UK. From carpentry he turned to engineering, and in 1786 helped Jonathan Hornblower to repair a compound steam engine he had installed in a London brewery. After the expiry of James Watt's patent in 1800, Woolf patented a compound engine and boiler in 1803. He later concentrated on perfecting the high-pressure Cornish engines of Richard Trevithick. |
