| Jazz pianist, born in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Largely self-taught, he became the first supreme keyboard jazz virtuoso. Nearly blind, he learned violin and then piano at Cousino School for the Blind and the Toledo School of Music. A professional musician from his teens, and largely self-taught, he became the first supreme keyboard jazz virtuoso. Moving to New York City in 1932, he made solo recordings and club appearances, becoming known for his technique, drive, and improvisational powers. The most influential of the swing-style pianists, he continued to work in the idiom until his death. |
