| biography:
| Austrian national socialist, born in Stonarov, S Czech Republic (formerly Stannern, Austria–Hungary). As chancellor in 1938, he invited German troops into Austria, resulting in the Anschluss. In 1939 he was made acting governor-general of occupied Poland, and in 1940 Reichskommissar (Commissioner) for the occupied Netherlands, where he played a leading role in the deportation of Jews. He had hoped for public support, but was almost universally hated and increasingly resorted to repression, although he agreed to the Allied food drops in the last days of the war. In 1945 he was captured by the Canadians, tried at Nuremberg, and executed for war crimes. |
