| Organic chemist, born in Dresden, E Germany. He developed the synthesis of substituted pyridines at the age of 25, and became professor at Zürich, Wurzburg, and Leipzig. He investigated the arrangement of atoms in the molecules of nitrogen compounds and the electrical conductivity of organic compounds, and was a pioneer in spectrophotometry. |
