| British statesman. He entered the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1899, and held a number of ministerial posts in Liberal and coalition administrations from 1908 to 1939. He is remembered for his mission to Czechoslovakia in 1938 to persuade the government to make concessions to Nazi Germany as part of Britain's ‘appeasement strategy’. |
