| biography:
| Prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago (1986–91) and president (1997– ). He studied in Trinidad and at Oxford, and qualified as a barrister. Returning to the West Indies he became politically active, and at independence (1967) was deputy leader of the moderate, centrist People's Nationalist Movement (PNM). In 1984, with other colleagues, he broke away to form a left-of-centre coalition which became the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR). In the 1986 general election this swept the PNM from power, making Robinson prime minister. He survived an attempted coup in 1990 when he was taken prisoner and treated badly. Freed by loyal troops, he continued to govern the country in a period of unrest. Calling an early general election, his party suffered a humiliating defeat, and he resigned at the end of 1991. In 1997 he became the country's first head of state to be elected. |
