| Dancer, choreographer, and director, born in New York City, USA. He trained at the School of American Ballet, and in 1956 joined New York City Ballet, creating important roles in Balanchine's Agon (1957) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1962) in which he was cast as Puck. The first African-American principal dancer to join that company, his aim was to found his own group in order to develop opportunities for fellow black dancers. The Dance Theater of Harlem made its debut in 1971 with resounding success, quickly growing to a company of international standing. |
