| Political activist and trade unionist, born in Merthyr Tydfil, S Wales, UK. He worked in a Rhondda coalmine, was a founder-member of the British Communist Party, and stood unsuccessfully for parliament a number of times. He was elected president of the South Wales miners' union in 1936, and general secretary of the National Union in 1946. |
