| Athlete, born in Opunake, Taranaki, New Zealand. He was a surprise winner of the Olympic 800 m in 1960, but then went on to win gold in both the 800 m and 1500 m in the 1964 Olympics. He also achieved the Commonwealth Games ‘double’ in 1962, and set world records at 800 m and one mile (twice). In 1962 he broke the world mile record at Wanganui, New Zealand, on an outdated all-grass track, to become his country's first sub-four-minute miler. |
