| biography:
| Athletics coach and author, born in Auckland, New Zealand. A marathon runner, he later achieved fame as the coach of many successful middle-distance runners, two of whom, Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, won Olympic golds on the same afternoon in 1960. His method emphasized building up strength through distance running before developing speed. From 1960 he popularized the habit of jogging as a means of avoiding cardiac problems. Among his books are Run to the Top (1960), Run for Your Life (1965), and Running the Lydiard Way (1978). |
