| Physicist, born in Mount Vernon, New York, USA. He studied at Toronto and Columbia universities, worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories (1951–61), then became professor at Stanford, CA. With his brother-in-law, Charles Townes, he devised the laser in 1958, although the first working model was made by Maiman in 1960. He shared the 1981 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work in spectroscopy. |
