| Public official, diplomat, and Supreme Court justice, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He practised law privately before serving the Office of Strategic Services during World War 2. He often represented the interests of organized labour in strike negotiations and litigation. After serving as a presidential campaign adviser (1960), he was appointed by President Kennedy to be secretary of labor (1961–2). He served in the US Supreme Court (1962–5), then resigned at the request of President Johnson in order to replace Adlai Stevenson as the US delegate to the UN (1965–8). He ran unsuccessfully for Governor of New York (1970), then taught and practised law in Washington, DC. His final years were taken up with human rights projects. |
