| biography:
| Saxophone player and composer, born in Gardena, California, USA. A freelance musician, he played with Buddy Rich, and recorded with Shorty Rogers, Mel Tormé, Miles Davis, and others. Albums from his own groups during the 1950s include Popo (1951) and Meets the Rhythm Section (1957), and after dealing with a drug problem he made a comeback in the 1970s with such albums as Art Pepper Today (1978). He co -wrote (with his wife) an autobiography, Straight Life (1979), and was the subject of the film Notes From A Jazz Survivor (1981). |
