| Classicist, born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, S England, UK. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge (1922 BA, 1926 MA) and the University of Birmingham (1934 LLD). He taught at Harvard (1929–63) and became an American citizen in 1936. Charmingly eccentric even in a world of eccentrics, he is best remembered for his books Conversion (1933), Saint Paul (1938), and many articles on ancient religion. He was editor of the Oxford Classical Dictionary (1949) and a contributor to the Cambridge Ancient History. |
