| biography:
| Playwright, born in Kislovodsk, SW Russia. His family lost their fortune in 1917, and moved to France, where he was educated and met Surrealist artists. His early absurdist plays L'Invasion (1950, The Invasion) and Le Professeur Taranne (1953) present the dislocations and cruelties of a meaningless world. Ping-Pong (1955) sees humanity reduced to mechanism. Later plays, such as Paolo Paoli (1957) and La Politique des restes (1967, trans The Politics of Waste), show a transition to commitment. |
