| biography:
| Journalist and writer, born in Limoges, C France. He wrote numerous articles, chronicles, and novels, such as Une Drôlesse (1862) and Les Victimes de Paris (1864), short stories, and theatre plays, but is best-remembered for his evocations of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1) in Le Débâcle and Paris Assiégé (both 1871). He became administrator of the Comédie Française in 1885, which inspired such works as La Vie moderne au Théâtre (1869–75). |
