| biography:
| Historian, born in London, UK, the nephew of Arnold Toynbee. He studied at Oxford, served in the Foreign Office in both World Wars, and attended the Paris peace conferences (1919 and 1946). He was professor of modern Greek and Byzantine history at London (1919–24) and director of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London (1925–55). His major work was the multi-volume Study of History (1933–61). |
