| Dutch army officer, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. A companion of William III, Prince of Orange and King of England, he replaced Bentinck as William's favourite and was created Earl of Albemarle in 1696, major-general in 1697, and Knight of the Garter in 1700. He returned to Holland after William's death. In the War of the Spanish Succession he fought at Ramillies, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet, and was Governor of Tournai in 1709. |
