| Boxer, born in Columbus, Mississippi, USA. He is the only man to have held three world titles at different weights simultaneously. His first title was at featherweight, which he won in 1937, and the following year he added both the welterweight and lightweight crowns. He lost the featherweight and lightweight titles in 1939, but he successfully defended his welterweight title a record 20 times. He had the last of his 175 fights in 1945, having won 144 and drawn 9. After retirement he became a Baptist minister and died in poverty in Los Angeles. |
