| Playwright, born in Rouen, NW France, the son of a famous pharmacist from Le Havre, the creator of anti-louse medication. His plays include La Marie-Rose, which concentrated on human problems, Une Femme libre (1934), L'Inconnue d'Arras (1936), Un Homme comme les autres (1937), Les Fiancés du Havre (1944), and Comme les Chardons (1964). He published two volumes of memoirs, C'était écrit (1974) and Les amours (1976), and was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1949. |
