| biography:
| Abbot, founder of the Trappists, born in Paris, France. He became abbot of the Cistercian abbey of La Trappe in 1662. Affected by the tragic deaths of two of his friends, he undertook a reform of his monastery, and finally established a religious order whose principles were perpetual prayer and austere self-denial. Intellectual work was forbidden, and only manual labour was allowed. He wrote of his order in the controversial Traité de la sainteté et des devoirs de la vie monastique (1683, Treatise on Holiness and the Duties of the Monastic Life). |
