| Physicist, born in Paris, France. In 1849 he was the first to measure the velocity of light by an experiment confined to the Earth's surface, and later collaborated with Léon Foucault. Fizeau also demonstrated the use of the Doppler principle in determining star velocity in the line of sight. |
