| biography:
| US naval officer, born in Boulder, Colorado, USA. He graduated from the US Naval Academy (1923) and entered the navy, performing with distinction in World War 2. He was a strategic plans director (1952–4) and the chief of naval operations (1955–61). He pursued business interests after his retirement (1961) and was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1977. The US Navy named an entire class of modern destroyers after him and the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) was commissioned in 1991. |
