| biography:
| Sikh leader, the compiler of the Adi Granth in 1604, born in Goindwal, Punjab, India. The text used today is an expanded version of his original compilation and is revered by all Sikhs. He began the construction of the Harimandir, or Golden Temple, at Amritsar, and extended the social reforms and missionary work begun by earlier gurus. After the Mughal emperor Akbar died, his successor, Jahangir, began to oppress the Sikhs and ordered Guru Arjan to eliminate all sections of the Adi Granth that offended Hindus or Muslims. He refused and was tortured to death. |
