| Socialist leader, writer, and orator, born in Castres, S France. He lectured on philosophy at Toulouse, became a deputy (1885), co-founded the Socialist paper L'Humanité (1904), and was the main figure in the founding of the French Socialist Party. He was assassinated in Paris while advocating reconciliation with Germany. |
