| biography:
| Archbishop of Milan. Elected archbishop in 1018, he supported the high aristocracy against the minor lords. He crowned Conrad (Konrad) the Salic as King of Italy (1026) but later clashed with him. When Conrad laid siege to Milan (1038), Ariberto set up the resistance and adopted the carroccio as an emblem. The emperor's death put an end to the hostilities. Driven out of the city by a popular revolt in 1042, he returned before his death. |
