| King of Italy (1002–14), the son of Dodone, Count of Pombia. He became Marquis of Ivrea (c.990) and, with the support of the lay feudal lords, was crowned at Pavia (1002) and recognized as King of Italy in the N and C of the country. Opposed by the powerful lords of the clergy and by Emperor Henry II, in 1014 he gave up the throne and retired to Fruttuaria Abbey. |
