| biography:
| Poet, probably a cleric of knightly descent, the leading representative of the wandering ‘Vaganten’. He is associated with the court of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa and his Chancellor Reinald von Dassel, who may have given him his sobriquet. Couched in simple Latin, his poems, which include drinking songs, are full of humour, irony, and a sensual delight in life. Famous are ‘Meum est propositum in taberna mori’, which was apparently directed against enemies at court, and ‘Estuans intrinsicus’. He also addresses his patrons, praising them and requesting a gift: ‘Kaiserhymnus’ and ‘Archicancellarie vir discrete’ fall into this category, as do ‘Vision’ and ‘Jonas-Beichte’. |
