| Physiologist, born in Bristol, SW England, UK. He was professor of physiology at Manchester (1920) and University College London (1923), and research professor of the Royal Society (1926–51). He shared the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research into heat production during muscle contraction, which helped establish the origin of muscular force. |
