| biography:
| The second son of the Emperor Maximilian II of Austria, born in Vienna. He was appointed governor of the Southern Netherlands by Philip II in 1593, halfway through the Eighty Years' War, after a distinguished military career against the Turks. Philip II of Spain originally intended him to marry his daughter Isabella, with The Netherlands as her dowry. His governorship lasted only two years, and was plagued with mutinies by the Spanish troops. At the time of his departure, the country had deteriorated even more. |
