| biography:
| The daughter of Philip II of Spain and Elisabeth of Valois, born in Segovia, C Spain. She married Albert, Archduke of Austria in 1599. Philip II handed the Southern Netherlands over to her as viceroy (1598), with reversion to the Spanish throne if she were childless after Albert's death. Isabella and Albert were jointly known as ‘the Archdukes’ (de aartshertogen), and worked hard to restore Catholicism and the economy, but never recovered the pre-Revolt prosperity. They managed to secure the Twelve-Year Truce in 1609, but Spanish demands prevented that becoming permanent. Isabella continued as viceroy after Albert's death in 1621, until she died in 1633. |
