| Roman Emperor of the West (393–423), the younger son of Theodosius I. A young and feeble ruler, he abandoned Britain to the barbarians, and cowered in Ravenna while Alaric and the Goths besieged and sacked Rome (408–10). From 395 to 408, power was effectively in the hands of Stilicho. |
