| biography:
| Portuguese dictator (1932–68), born near Coimbra, C Portugal, where he studied law, and taught economics. In 1928 he became minister of finance, with extensive powers. As premier, he introduced a new, authoritarian regime, the Estado Novo (‘New State’). He was also minister of war (1936–44) and of foreign affairs (1936–47) during the delicate period of the Spanish Civil War, in which he supported Franco. He maintained Portuguese neutrality during World War 2. He retired following a stroke in 1968. |
