| biography:
| Historian and literary critic, born in Barcelona, NE Spain. Forsaking his early military ambitions, he spent some time in the Sierra Morena as a colonist in Olavide's project for agricultural renewal, but returned to Madrid to become permanent secretary of the Real Academia de la Historia. After the French invasion he sought refuge in Cádiz, where he became a respected deputy to the Cortes. His influential Filosofía de la elocuencia (1777) was revised for the much better London edition of 1812. The Teatro histórico-crítico de la elocuencia española (5 vols, 1780–94) was a largely justifiable defence of Spanish literature against its critics, such as Masson de Morvilliers. His major work is the closely researched Memorias históricas sobre la Marina, Comercio, y Arte de la antigua ciudad de Barcelona (4 vols, 1779–92). He also edited Antiguos tratados de paces y alianzas entre algunos reyes de Aragón y diferentes príncipes infieles de Asia y Africa (1786). |
