| biography:
| Painter, born in Barcelona, NE Spain. He studied law in Barcelona (1943–6), abandoned law for painting, in which he was largely self-taught, and became a founder member of the Dau al Set (‘Seven on the Die’) group of avant-garde artists and writers. His first one-man show in America, at the Martha Jackson Gallery in 1953, was followed by numerous exhibitions and international prizes. From 1955 he produced ‘matter’ paintings, using objects such as a desk instead of a canvas, as in ‘Desk with Straw’. |
