| Italian politician, prime minister (1955–7, 1959–60), and president (1962–4), born in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. He was a member of the Christian Democrat Party and a deputy in the Constituent Assembly. As agriculture minister (1946–51), he was responsible for the land reform scheme (1949). He held a number of ministerial posts and was twice prime minister. President of the republic in 1962, he was forced to resign in 1964 with serious health problems. |
