| Folklorist who pioneered the study of folklore in Spain, born in Santiago de Compostela, NW Spain. He was the father of the poets Antonio and Manuel Machado. His many works include Colección de enigmas y adivinanzas (1880), Bases del folklore español (1881), Adivinanzas francescas (1881), and Colección de cantos flamencos (1881). He published and edited the Biblioteca de las Tradiciones Populares Españolas (11 vols, 1883–6), to which he himself contributed Vol. 5, Estudios sobre la literatura popular (1884). He founded El Folklore Andaluz (1882–3) and later El Folklore Extremeño. |
