| Mexican soldier, president (1833–6, 1846–7, 1853–5), and dictator (1839, 1841–5), born in Jalapa, E Mexico. Following the Texas revolt (1836), he defeated Texan forces at the Alamo, but was then routed at San Jacinto R, and imprisoned for eight months. He was recalled from exile in 1846 to be president during the war with the USA, and was twice defeated in the field. He was again recalled by a revolution in 1853, and appointed president for life, but in 1855 he was driven from the country. In 1867, after the death of Maximilian, he tried to effect a landing, but was captured and sentenced to death, then allowed to retire to New York. He returned at the amnesty of 1872. |
