| South American soldier–patriot, born in Cumaná, NE Venezuela. He was Bolívar's lieutenant, defeated the Spaniards at Ayacucho (1824), and became the first president (1826) of Bolivia. He resigned in 1828, took service with Colombia, and won the Battle of Tarqui (1829) against Peru. He was assassinated near Paslò. |
