| Venezuelan dictator, born in Carácas, Venezuela. He was vice-president from 1863 to 1868. Driven from office (1868), he headed a revolution which restored him to power (1870), and became dictator, holding the presidency on three occasions (1873–7, 1879–84, 1886–8). He then retired to Paris. |
