| biography:
| Playwright, born in El Escorial, C Spain. After teaching French for some time he went into politics. A member of the tertulia El Parnasillo, he was elected to the Real Academia Española. His early plays, Un año después de la boda and Cuidado con los novios (both 1826), are insignificant comedies, but he achieved respect and recognition with his Neoclassical tragedy, Blanca de Borbón (1835), the consort of Pedro el Cruel. His historical play Carlos II el Hechizado (1837) is the most impressive of a series including plays on William Tell, Don Álvaro de Luna, and El Gran Capitán. His most important play is Guzmán el Bueno (1842). He also wrote a thoughtful discussion, De la instrucción pública en España (3 vols, 1855). |
