| Playwright, born in Chiclana, S Spain. He worked in the consular service from 1864, and was director of the Archaeological Museum in Madrid from 1872. An exponent of 19th-c Romanticism, he is best known for his plays El trovador (1836, The Troubadour) and Simon Bocanegra (1857), on which Verdi based his operas, Il trovatore and Simon Boccanegra. |
