| Mathematician, born in Warsaw, Poland. Fleeing Nazism, he emigrated to the USA (1940), where he taught longest at the University of Chicago (1964). A National Academy of Sciences member and recipient of the National Medal of Science (1986), he did pioneering research in hard analysis. He wrote six books and over 180 papers. |
