| biography:
| Catalan painter and sculptor, born in Gràcia (now a suburb of Barcelona), NE Spain. He studied sculpture at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona. In 1875 he received a grant to work in Rome where he produced notable works before abandoning sculpture for painting, showing excellent skill in both watercolours and oils. This change, which took place c.1880, brought him rapid success. He lived in Barcelona (1886–94) then moved to Paris where he obtained several distinctions. In 1904 he was appointed Inspector General of Fine Arts in Mexico, then returned to Rome (1908) and worked tirelessly before another visit to Barcelona (1926). He donated a valuable collection of his works to the Museum of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His work can also be seen in the museums of Rome, the Vatican, Madrid, Mexico, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Stockholm, and Philadelphia. |
